Solar & Battery Storage

Solar that works
in January,
not just July.

A premium solar and battery system designed specifically for your home β€” not a one-size-fits-all package. Survey-designed, MCS-certified, and built to save you money in every month of the year.

How It Works

Your system works every month of the year

The biggest misconception about solar is that it only works in summer. With battery storage, that's simply not true.

β˜€ April – September

Solar season

Your panels generate more electricity than your household uses during the day. Surplus charges the battery. In the evening, you draw from the battery β€” not from the grid. On the best days, your meter barely moves.

Result: near grid-independent. Grid imports close to zero on good days.
❄ October – March

Battery season

Solar generation drops, but your battery doesn't stop earning. On a Time-of-Use tariff, it charges overnight at 7–8p/kWh β€” the cheapest grid rate available β€” and discharges during peak evening hours when grid rates hit 24p or more.

Result: you replace expensive electricity with cheap electricity, every day.
∞ Year-round

Smart management

Your system monitors live grid pricing and your battery state automatically β€” charging and discharging to maximise savings without you lifting a finger.

Result: meaningful savings every single month, whatever the weather.
The Process

From first call to first saving

1

Free survey & design

We visit your property, assess your roof orientation, shading and pitch, review your actual energy usage and design a system sized for your home. You receive a fixed-price proposal β€” no obligation.

2

We handle everything

DNO application, grid connection paperwork, scaffolding coordination, MCS registration, building control sign-off. You don't need to chase anyone or understand the acronyms. We do all of it.

3

Switch on & start saving

Installation typically takes one to two days. We commission the system, walk you through the monitoring app, explain your Time-of-Use tariff options, and register your MCS certificate. You're saving from day one.

The Equipment

Why what we install matters as much as the installation

Cheap components are the most expensive mistake you can make.

The solar market has a problem: headline system prices are driven down by installers cutting costs on panels, inverters and batteries. Budget components degrade faster, carry shorter warranties, and may fail before your system has paid for itself.

We specify Trina Vertex panels and Fox ESS hybrid inverters and battery systems. Not premium for the sake of it β€” the components our engineers would install in their own homes. Every part carries full manufacturer warranties.

A correctly specified battery is the single most important part of a modern solar system. It is not an optional extra β€” it is what makes the financial case work year-round. We size the battery for your actual consumption, not for the minimum spec needed to close a sale.

Solar Panels

Trina Vertex S+

N-Type Mono Β· 450–500W

N-Type technology delivers higher efficiency in real-world UK conditions β€” including low light and diffuse cloud cover. Dual-glass construction improves durability. Full black finish integrates cleanly into UK roof aesthetics.

  • Up to 22.5% module efficiency
  • Better low-light performance than P-Type
  • Dual-glass durability
  • Full black β€” cleaner on UK roofs
βœ“ 25-year performance warranty
Hybrid Inverter

Fox ESS H1 G2

Hybrid Β· 3.68–10kW

A hybrid inverter manages solar generation, battery storage and grid connection simultaneously. It is the intelligence layer of the system β€” deciding when to use solar, when to draw from the battery, when to charge from cheap overnight grid power, and when to export.

  • Manages solar, battery & grid together
  • Time-of-Use tariff optimisation built in
  • Expandable β€” add batteries later
  • Live monitoring via app
βœ“ 5-year inverter warranty
Battery Storage

Fox ESS EP11-H

10.36kWh Li-ion Β· Self-heating

The battery is where most budget systems cut corners. Undersizing is the most common installer mistake. The EP11-H includes a self-heating element for better performance at the low temperatures common in UK winters.

  • 10.36kWh usable capacity β€” properly sized
  • Self-heating for UK winter performance
  • Charges at 7–8p/kWh overnight
  • Discharges at peak 24p+ rates
βœ“ 10-year battery warranty

What could solar save you?

Enter your details for a personalised estimate. All assumptions are declared β€” we don't inflate figures to win the job. If the numbers don't stack up for your situation, we'll tell you.

Estimates assume a south-facing roof at 35Β° pitch, a typical 8–10 panel system (3.2–4kWp) with 10kWh battery storage, and current energy tariffs. East/west facing roofs typically generate 15–20% less. Payback periods of 10–14 years are typical for most Hertfordshire and Essex properties β€” your free survey will produce a site-specific calculation with declared assumptions. MCS-aligned methodology.

Real Installation Β· Hertfordshire 2026

From standard grid customer to energy arbitrageur in one installation.

A JJB Volta customer in Hertfordshire had solar panels installed without battery storage several years ago. The system generated well in summer but left them grid-dependent for most of the year β€” and entirely dependent in winter.

Following the addition of a Fox ESS battery system in early 2026, their self-consumption doubled immediately. By switching to a Time-of-Use tariff, the battery now charges overnight at the cheapest grid rate and discharges during the peak evening window.

Quick Summary

About JJB Volta Solar & Battery Storage

JJB Volta designs and installs solar PV and battery storage systems for homeowners across Hertfordshire and Essex. Every system is survey-designed and MCS certified. The company specifies Trina Vertex S+ N-Type panels (450–500W, up to 22.5% efficiency, 25-year performance warranty) and Fox ESS hybrid inverters and battery storage systems (10.36kWh usable capacity, 10-year battery warranty).

A standard installation is 4–5kWp with 10–10.4kWh battery storage. Typical annual energy bill saving in year one: Β£700–£1,200. Typical payback period: 10–14 years. Panel performance warranty: 25 years. Installation takes 1–2 days.

How it works year-round: April–September, solar surplus charges the battery; evening draw comes from the battery, not the grid. October–March, the battery charges overnight at 7–8p/kWh on a Time-of-Use tariff and discharges during peak evening hours at 24p+. Year-round smart charge/discharge optimisation based on live grid pricing.

The process: free site survey and system design; JJB Volta handles DNO application, grid connection, scaffolding, MCS registration and building control sign-off; installation 1–2 days; system commissioned with monitoring app walkthrough.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): MCS certification is required to earn SEG export payments. JJB Volta handles MCS registration as part of every installation. Recent customers are exporting at 27–37p/kWh during peak hours on Octopus Intelligent tariff.
