We got into solar because
we kept seeing it
done badly.

JJB Volta is built by two electricians who spent years watching homeowners get sold solar systems that were underspecified, poorly installed, and propped up by savings claims that didn't survive contact with a January electricity bill. We decided to do it properly instead.

Our Story

Electricians first. Solar and EV installers second.

We started JJB Electrical in 2016 with a straightforward belief: show up when you say you will, do the job properly, charge what you quoted, and leave the place clean. It sounds obvious. It turned out to be rarer than it should be.

We moved into solar and EV charging the same way we approached every other service β€” by asking whether we could do it better than most of what was out there. The answer was yes, and the reason was simple: we're qualified electricians. We understand the full system, not just the panels on the roof. We know what a correct installation looks like, what happens when a battery is undersized, and why a hybrid inverter that manages solar, storage and grid simultaneously is a fundamentally different product to a basic string inverter with a budget battery bolted on.

The solar market has a problem with race-to-the-bottom pricing. When an installer wins on headline cost, something in the specification has been compromised. It's almost always the battery β€” too small to store a full day's surplus or carry the household through a winter evening. The customer won't notice for a year or two. By then the installer has moved on. We won't do it. If a system doesn't stack up financially for a customer's actual situation, we tell them before they commit to anything.

Nine years on, we're still both involved in every installation. The business has grown, the team has grown, but the standard hasn't changed. Every job gets the same attention whether it's a single EV charger or a full solar and battery system. Because Jamie and Dan both live locally β€” and they drive past the houses they've worked on.

β€œ

The most expensive thing we can do to a customer is sell them a system that underperforms. We'd rather tell someone solar isn't right for them than fit something that disappoints them in three years.

The People Behind JJB Volta

Two craftsmen who built a business.

Not a sales team. Not a management layer. Two highly skilled electricians who happen to run the company β€” and still care deeply about every job they do.

Jamie Brock, Co-Founder Β· Master Electrician

Co-Founder Β· Master Electrician

I want customers to trust us completely. Not because we're the cheapest β€” because we do what we say we'll do, every time.

Jamie has been a qualified electrician for over fifteen years. He's technically meticulous β€” the kind of person who thinks about cable runs, load calculations and system integration in a way most people reserve for things they're genuinely passionate about. He is genuinely passionate about it.

He leads on customer relationships and system design. He's the person most likely to be on your roof and the person most likely to answer when you call. He'll walk you through the numbers honestly, explain what he'd specify for his own home, and tell you clearly if the economics don't work for your situation.

His long-term ambition for JJB Volta is to build the most trusted solar and EV business in Hertfordshire and Essex β€” not the biggest, and definitely not the cheapest. The one where every engineer is proud of the standard and every customer becomes a long-term advocate.

Customers remember how they were treated long after they've forgotten what they paid. That's not a philosophy β€” it's just how good businesses work.

Dan is the operational backbone of JJB Volta. Where Jamie leads on customer relationships, Dan runs the quality side β€” he's the one who goes back over a completed installation and asks whether it was done to the standard he'd want in his own home. The answer has to be yes before a job is signed off.

He's deeply frustrated by how the trades have been devalued β€” by companies that compete on price by cutting corners on specification, and by an industry culture that treats skill as a commodity. His response to all of it is the same: refuse to participate. Specify it right, install it right, stand behind it.

Dan cares about customers who understand what quality workmanship actually is. Not price shoppers β€” homeowners who want a system designed for their property, installed properly, and backed by people who'll still be here in ten years. That's the customer JJB Volta is built for.

Our Philosophy

Good enough isn't good enough.

Three principles that haven't changed since 2016 β€” and won't.

01
01

Specify it right or don't specify it at all.

The most expensive thing we can do to a customer is sell them a system that underperforms. An undersized battery. A budget inverter that fails at year eight. Panels chosen to hit a price point rather than a performance target. Every component we specify is what we'd put in our own homes β€” because that's the only standard worth having.

02
02

Honest numbers, every time.

We include a 25-year financial projection in every proposal, with declared assumptions you can check. If the payback period doesn't work for your situation β€” if you're planning to move in three years, if your roof faces north-east, if your usage doesn't suit solar β€” we'll tell you before you commit. We'd rather lose a sale than install something that disappoints.

Our reputation here is everything.

Jamie and Dan both live locally. Their neighbours use JJB. When they finish a job, they drive home past the house they just worked on. That's the accountability structure that makes a genuinely local business different from a national one. Every job either builds or damages something they care about. So every job gets done properly.

The paperwork matters. Here's ours.

MCS certification is not optional for solar installers who want their customers to receive Smart Export Guarantee payments. NAPIT registration means every installation is independently overseen and the work meets current regulations. Which? Trusted Trader means we've been vetted, our reviews are verified, and there's a formal dispute resolution process if anything ever goes wrong. We don't display these because they look good on a webpage. We hold them because they're the baseline of operating properly β€” and because they protect our customers.

MCS Certified Installer

MCS Certified Installer

MCS accreditation is the industry standard for solar PV and battery storage installers. It confirms our systems are designed and installed to an independently audited standard β€” and it's required for customers to access Smart Export Guarantee payments.

NAPIT Registered

NAPIT Registered

NAPIT registration means every electrical installation we carry out is overseen by an independent body. We self-certify our work to Part P of the Building Regulations, which means you receive the correct documentation and your installation is covered.

Which? Trusted Trader

Which? Trusted Trader

Which? Trusted Trader status means we've passed a rigorous vetting process, our customer reviews are verified as genuine, and any dispute has a formal resolution pathway through Which?. It is one of the strongest independent endorsements a UK trades business can hold.

RECC Member

The Renewable Energy Consumer Code is the industry standard consumer protection scheme for renewable energy installers. RECC membership means JJB Volta is committed to fair sales practices, accurate information, and a clear complaints process β€” giving customers independent protection on every installation.

Every member of the JJB Volta team has undergone a Disclosure and Barring Service check. You can be confident having our engineers in your home β€” with or without you present.

6yr

6-Year Workmanship Guarantee

Every installation we carry out is covered by a six-year workmanship guarantee registered with NAPIT. Equipment carries separate manufacturer warranties β€” 25 years on panels, 10 years on batteries. If something we installed fails because of how we installed it, we fix it. No arguments, no charges.

If this sounds like the kind of company you want installing on your roof β€” let's talk.

Free survey, fixed price, no pressure. You'll speak to Jamie or Dan directly. If it doesn't make financial sense for your home, they'll tell you.
